Loss Control Surveys

Grocery Supermarkets

InFocus Safety Solutions, Inc. is qualified to conduct supermarket surveys for multiline coverages such as property (e.g. fire, extended coverage, vandalism and malicious mischief), crime, general liability, product liability, and workers' compensation. We conduct Loss Control Surveys for monoline coverage such as workers’ compensation as well.

InFocus uses the COPE (Construction, Occupancy, Protection, Exposure) to help outline our survey. We begin outside, several blocks away from the grocery store to identify fire hydrants and distance to the fire departments. We then survey the building's construction. We observe the number of floors, fire escapes, stairs, loading docks, lower-level basement windows and fire sprinkler connections.

The Loss Control Survey

We start with surveying the roof. We check the refrigerant and air compressor systems. If applicable, we check the exhaust ventilation system.

We take it inside and survey the interior setup and each department (produce, deli, bakery, meat, and back room).

Basic Loss Control Outline

The basic property loss control survey report on a grocery store should cover the following areas:

  • building construction

  • contents

  • common hazards (e.g., heat, refrigeration/air conditioning, electric, smoking, incinerator, housekeeping)

  • special hazards (e.g., operations, equipment, processes, machinery)

  • exposures (exterior, interior)

  • protection (private, public)

  • allied perils (e.g., extended coverage, vandalism and malicious mischief, earthquake, demolition, collapse, water damage, sprinkler leakage)

  • time element (replacement time estimate for building, equipment, stock)

  • loss potential (possible/probable maximum involvement)

  • prior losses

  • recommendations
